Robots, androids, cyborgs and the like have long been an obsession of mine. As a kid, I fell in love with Asimov’s books and ruminations on the laws of robotics. Something about the story of the mechanical man seemed so strange and yet so familiar. The immortal longing to become human and the human longing to become immortal–these are themes that have resonated in our imaginations since the formations of our earliest mythologies.
From the automaton golden maidens of Greek mythology to the Tin Man longing for a heart, the many droids of Star Wars and the renegade andys dreamed up by author Philip K. Dick and later reimagined in Blade Runner–I love them all.
I’m currently writing a book that explores such themes, but that’s a story for another day. Tonight, I’m wondering if any of you share a similar passion for the almost-but-not-quite-human? What (or who) are some of your favorite robot characters in literature and film? And why?
Note: today’s topic was inspired by this geeky gem–a DaisyJewel bronze steampunk robot pendant necklace with articulated appendages and rhinestone eyes. Check him out. 🤖
